Transportation accidents are one of the leading causes of on-the-job injuries and fatalities in Ohio today. In fact, the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) estimates that in 2014 alone, an estimated 5,000 work zone accidents accounted for more than 1,000 injuries and 17 deaths.

Our Ohio car accident attorneys at Nurenberg, Paris, Heller & McCarthy explain these collisions also lead to a large number of Ohio workers’ compensation claims. To help reduce the number of worker injuries, ODOT and the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation have partnered to promote safety along our state’s roadways.

According to an article from The Morning Journal, the agencies will be combining forces to educate the public about what they can do to keep workers and other motorists safe in work zones. Officials say two of the best ways for drivers to prevent accidental injuries and deaths resulting from car accidents in work zones are for motorists to slow down and move over. Ohio’s “Move Over” law requires vehicle operators to reduce speed and shift one lane away from stopped emergency vehicles that have their lights or sirens activated.

Other ways you can help keep work zones safe is by eliminating distractions in your vehicle and never drinking and driving.

At Nurenberg, Paris, Heller & McCarthy, our legal staff is aware of the risks workers in construction zones face on a daily basis and our Ohio workers’ compensation lawyers are hopeful this particular campaign can make the work environment on our state’s roads safer.
