In Everglades City, Florida, on the evening of April 6, the host of the saltwater fishing show Spanish Fly, Jose Weejebe, was fatally injured in a small plane crash.
Today, the National Transportation and Safety Board (NTSB) released its preliminary fatal plane crash report, according to the Brevard Times.
Weejebe was the pilot of the plane. He held a private pilot certificate, and his most recent third-class Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) medical certificate was issued on February 24, 2011, where he reported 1,208 hours of total flight experience.
Shortly after takeoff from Everglades Airpark, the experimental amateur-built CA8-SF, N548SF, that Weejebe was flying, was substantially damaged when it hit the ground.
The personal flight was conducted under the provisions of Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91. No flight plan had been filed for the flight, which was headed to Merritt Island Airport.
The airplane hit the ground about 275 yards east of the departure end of the runway. The wreckage path was about 20 feet in length, and there were two indentations in the ground.
The main wreckage was nearly consumed by the post-crash fire.
The NTSB report still leaves an unanswered question: What exactly happened that caused this plane to crash?
