Jotul North America has recently announced a voluntary recall on four different models of Jotul and Scan gas fireplace inserts, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.
These inserts—which are designed to create “fireplace effects fueled by natural gas or liquid propane”—have been reported as hazardous.
Measuring about 17 inches by 32 inches, the fireplace inserts are cast iron or steel and have a glass front, ceramic fiber logs, a gas burner and an electrical cord.
According to the reports, the electrical wiring from these fireplace inserts can come into contact with the metal rating plate, which can put consumers at risk for electrical shocks and burns.
Because of the product defect, consumers are urged to discontinue use and immediately unplug the unit from electrical sources.
To schedule a free repair, contact the store where the insert was purchased or contact Jotul directly.
About 1,200 in the United States and 50 in Canada were sold at independent specialty fireplace and stove stores from June 2010 through September 2012 for about $2,200.
The U. S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is interested in receiving incident or injury reports that are either directly related to this product recall or involve a different hazard with the same product.
