An aviation executive of a small charter airline in Minnesota was killed this month, reports NBC Chicago.
The 74-year-old CEO of Bemidji Aviation Services died when the two-engine plane that he was piloting crashed shortly before 3 p.m. on Dec. 5, about a half-mile from Gougar and Offner roads in Manhattan Township in Will County, Minnesota.
The small plane fell to the ground, leaving a path of debris several hundred yards long. The pilot, who was the only person on board, was pronounced dead at the scene.
National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) spokesman Eric Weiss said that the plane was a Hawker Beechcraft BE-58 registered to Bemidji Aviation Services in Minnesota, a charter and cargo airline.
According to the airline’s website, the man who was killed had co-owned the airline company for 36 years before it became employee-owned in 2006. He was the company’s president.
The company expressed sympathy to the family and said his death was a “profound loss for their family, our company, and the Bemidji community.”
Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Tony Molinaro said that Bemidji Aviation was fully cooperating with the NTSB in its investigation.
A memorial fund has been established in the man’s name that will assist novice pilots interested in pursuing aviation careers,
