In response to the discovery of contamination in certain sterile medications, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced the voluntary recall of all medications compounded at Main Street Family Pharmacy, LLC. Officials say the contamination has led to seven reports being filed in reference to Drug Injuries patients have sustained.
According to an FDA press release, the adverse health events being reported stemmed from injections of preservative-free methylprednisolone acetate the victims received. Those individuals developed abscesses on their skin that are believed to be the result of a fungal infection.
The cases are reminiscent of the recent fungal meningitis outbreak that occurred after hundreds of patients received contaminated steroid injections. The outbreak resulted in 55 people losing their lives and 741 others being sickened.
To prevent any further distribution of contaminated products, the FDA has requested all medications manufactured at the Main Street Family Pharmacy be quarantined and destroyed. Anyone possessing the affected products has been instructed to contact Main Street Family Pharmacy with any questions. Those who have received potentially contaminated products should consult with a physician. If an adverse health event is confirmed to be the result of an affected product, the FDA should be contacted to report the incident immediately.
The Ohio Personal Injury Lawyers with Nurenberg, Paris, Heller & McCarthy recognize the risks in taking a contaminated drug. The firm encourages anyone who has been harmed by such a product to discuss their legal options with an attorney.
