While the use of robotics to perform surgeries is gaining acceptance across the country, numerous reports of patients suffering serious adverse health events due to errors made by the machines or doctors using the devices are surfacing.
For example, a 37-year-old woman suffered da Vinci® Surgical Robot Injuries after undergoing a hysterectomy using the device. She had developed fibroids that were causing extreme pain and underwent the procedure as both a health precaution and to put an end to the agonizing pain she was suffering. Weeks after the surgery though, sutures inside her body broke, allowing her internal organs to spill out of her body.
Incidents like this are rare, but have become increasingly common as more robotics are used to perform surgeries. According to an article by NBC News, 89 deaths and more than 200 botched procedures have been blamed on errors made using the da Vinci system.
In response to the numerous reports of errors with the system, the FDA is conducting a survey of surgeons who have used or continue to use the system to determine what changes need to be made to ensure patient safety.
The Ohio Personal Injury Lawyers with Nurenberg, Paris, Heller & McCarthy recognize the trauma that can result from injuries caused by surgical mistakes. That's why the firm is here to help anyone who has been injured during surgery using the da Vinci surgical robot.
