When a person suffers a blow to the head, there is a strong chance they could suffer a Traumatic Brain Injury. The effects of such injuries have been documented as lasting from several days to causing an individual to suffer a lifetime of disability.
Researchers have worked to discover better and more effective ways to treat these injuries, and recently discovered that a hormone commonly found in pregnant women may hold the key. According to an article released by News 4 JAX, Dr. Daniel Laskowitz examined the results of 150 patients who had suffered a brain injury and were treated with an IV drip of the hormone progesterone. The hormone was given to the patient within eight hours of injury and was continually administered for the following five days.
Test results show those who received the progesterone treatment had decreased swelling and cell death and increased reconstruction of the blood-brain barrier compared to patients who received a placebo.
The positive response to the treatment has prompted Laskowitz to expand his research to include more than 1,100 new cases.
The Ohio Personal Injury Lawyers with Nurenberg, Paris, Heller & McCarthy applaud advancements in treatment for brain injuries that are being discovered and hope the researcher's findings will discover new, real-world applications.
