While only a small number of commercial aviation accidents are reported each year, these incidents do occur. In fact, there were roughly 64 such incidents that occurred in 2012. This leaves many people wondering, “Who is responsible for ensuring aviation safety in the United States today?”
Unfortunately, the answer is that the airlines are liable for following all safety protocols and regulations. This is because the Federal Aviation Administration simply doesn’t have the manpower to examine and investigate each aircraft and pilot prior to take off.
An article from Forbes points out there are more than 610,000 pilots in the United States operating under approximately 100 airlines and carriers. Yet, the FAA only employs 6,389 workers with jobs that are tied to ensuring aircraft safety. This means the onus of responsibility is on the airline to stay in compliance with all safety regulations.
Many feel this is a flawed system though and that there should be a system of checks and balances to make sure airlines and their employees are following safety guidelines at all times.
In the meantime, many of those who fly are wondering what they should do in the event they are harmed as the result of an accident while aboard a plane. At the law firm of Nurenberg, Paris, Heller & McCarthy, our Cleveland personal injury lawyers urge anyone who is the victim of such an incident to follow these steps:
