Baby proofing your home and any other area your youngster may spend time is an important step in keeping your children safe from injuries. The Consumer Products Safety Commission receives complaints of as many as 15 deaths relating to choking in children under the age of three. Toys too tiny for babies and toddlers are often to blame. Some of these are tiny toys, parts of toys, balloons, marbles and small balls. The Consumer Product Safety Commission regular investigates injuries and deatsh from dangerous products, including toys. They often work with manufactures to recall products that cause harmful and sometimes fatal injuries. As a parent you can stay up to date on toy recalls by checking the U.S. Government recall website at www.recalls.gov. To get the most up to date information you can sign up for their free e-mail recall alert.
One of the most recent recalls involved the recall of 1.6 million Little Tikes workshop sets and trucks. These toy sets have been on the market for 15 years. The workbench has small red and blue plastic toy nails 3 14 inches long by 1 14 inch in diameter. These nails can pose a chocking hazard for children under the age of three. Consumer Reports recently reported that one of the nails became lodged in the throat of an 11 month old from South Carolina. He was hospitalized and made a full recovery. The nails were sold as part of four workshop sets and one truck with a tool set. The Consumer Product Safety Commission is advising parents to remove the toy nails for children under the age of three.
An excellent safety rule for parents and babysitters is that if a toy or part of a toy set can fall through an empty cardboard tube from a roll of toilet paper it is too small for children under the age of three. Always know what your child is playing with, who he or she is playing with and where they are playing. Even small household items found on the floor, some that can be sparkling and enticing, can be a choking hazard.
