A 69-year-old Montgomery, Texas, man died on Saturday, August 13, when his home-built airplane collided with another small plane over Lake Conroe in Walker County, Texas.
The Houston Chronicle reports that the crash occurred around 11:45 a.m. near FM 1375 at Stubblefield Lake Road.
Both planes were flying in a formation with seven home-built aircraft that had taken off from Lone Star Airport. When one plane flew under another, the two collided, and the pilot on the bottom crashed his eight-year-old single-engine RV-6 into a forest. He died at the scene.
The pilot of the other plane, an RV-8, crashed into a pond and was treated for a burn on his arm at the scene.
“They were doing stunts, just like flying in a 'V,' and the back plane came up, hit the front plane, and it just fell out of the sky like a rock,” witness Hunter Strole told ABC. "It looked pretty bad. There was smoke everywhere, and it was bad.”
Both pilots were reportedly members of a Conroe-based flight club that practices formations each week.
This is Conroe County’s second fatal crash in the past few months; in May a 70-year-old father and his 52-year-old daughter died when their experimental plane crashed on the way to an air show.
