Two people have died in small plane crash in West Jordan, Utah, reports The Salt Lake Tribune.
The light plane crashed on Tuesday, killing the 40-year-old male passenger at the scene. The plane’s 28-year-old pilot—a resident of Nephi, Utah—died from his injuries very early this morning at University Hospital in Salt Lake City after undergoing hours of surgery.
The fixed-wing, single-engine plane crashed into a field at the West Jordan Soccer Complex near 900 South and 4340 West.
Minutes earlier the pilot had taken off from South Valley Regional Airport. A witness tells The Tribune that he saw the pilot try to gain altitude several times, but the plane never rose higher than 70 feet in the air.
“[The pilot] didn’t gain altitude higher than [a] telephone pole,” the witness said. “The impact was extremely loud.”
The pilot was found alive immediately after the crash, and a medical helicopter took him to University Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 12:15 a.m. on Wednesday.
Of note: The crash happened shortly after a rainstorm moved through the area, though it’s not yet known what role weather may have played in the aviation accident.
The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the aviation accident.
