The National Transportation Safety Board cited driver fatigue as a cause of the road tragedy that seriously injured comedian Tracy Morgan. The driver of the WalMart truck had been awake for more than 28 hours prior to the crash and had driven overnight to WalMart's distribution center before heading out on the delivery that led to the accident. None of the passengers in the Morgan vehicle were wearing seatbelts. The Morgan vehicle had been customized, leaving no available emergency exists. According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, more than 750 people die and 20,000 more are injured annually because of tired commercial drivers. Working long hours not only increases the risk of errors but impairs a driver's ability to get proper restorative sleep after being awake for so long. The FMCSA data indicates that the risk of a crash doubles from the 8th to the 10th hour of driving and doubles again from the 10th to the 11th hour of driving alone. With more vehicles on the road than ever before, driver fatigue is more concerning now than ever.
