USAir Flight 427, a Boeing 737, was traveling from Chicago to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on September 8, 1994. At 7:04 p.m.—shortly after the pilot radioed to the air traffic controller that they were on their final approach into Pittsburgh International Airport in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania—the plane crashed into a heavily wooded area. All 127 passengers and crew on board perished. After an extensive investigation, it was determined that the loss of control of the aircraft was the result of an un-commanded movement of the rudder, as a result of a jam of the main rudder power control unit servo valve.
Aviation accident attorney Jamie Lebovitz represented families of the victims and obtained confidential settlements for the surviving family members.
