In the aftermath of a frightening midair collision earlier this year between a passenger jet and a military helicopter near Washington, D.C., the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is taking urgent action to prevent future accidents.

A recent FAA analysis has identified several airports across the country that may be at increased risk for similar midair incidents. These findings come after a detailed review of how different types of aircraft—especially helicopters and airplanes—are operating within shared airspace.

Las Vegas Airport Under Scrutiny

Among the top concerns is Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas. Like Washington's Reagan National Airport, it has a complex mix of aircraft traffic, including a large number of helicopters offering sightseeing tours over the Las Vegas Strip and the Grand Canyon.

Unfortunately, the FAA found that many of these helicopter flights were not receiving proper traffic updates from air traffic control. Without these advisories, pilots might not be aware of nearby aircraft, which creates a dangerous situation where standard safety rules for airspace separation aren't being followed.

Southern California Airports Also at Risk

The FAA also raised red flags about Hollywood Burbank and Van Nuys airports in Southern California. These airports serve both fast-moving jets and slower aircraft, such as small private planes and helicopters. That combination can significantly raise the risk of midair collisions, especially in busy airspace.

Why This Matters

Any failure in the air traffic control system—or in how different aircraft are managed in shared airspace—can have devastating consequences.
