On June 12, 2025, a devastating aviation disaster struck Ahmedabad, India, when Air India Flight 171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner en route to London Gatwick, crashed shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. The aircraft was carrying 242 individuals, including 230 passengers and 12 crew members. Tragically, there were no survivors.
Flight 171 departed at 1:38 p.m. local time. Within minutes, the aircraft issued a mayday call and lost contact with air traffic control at an altitude of approximately 625 feet. The plane crashed into a residential area in the Meghani Nagar neighborhood, specifically striking a hostel building associated with B.J. Medical College. Eyewitnesses reported hearing multiple explosions and seeing thick black smoke billowing from the crash site.
All 242 people on board perished in the crash. The passengers included 169 Indian nationals, 53 Britons, seven Portuguese, and one Canadian. Additionally, the crash resulted in fatalities and injuries among residents in the densely populated area where the plane went down.
Emergency services, including firefighters and medical teams, were promptly dispatched to the scene. Rescue operations were challenged by the intensity of the fire and the structural damage to the buildings. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has initiated a comprehensive investigation to determine the cause of the crash. Preliminary reports indicate that the aircraft's undercarriage had not been retracted, and the flaps appeared to have been retracted at the time of the crash.
This incident marks the first fatal crash involving a Boeing 787 aircraft since its introduction in 2009. The Dreamliner had previously maintained a strong safety record, making this tragedy particularly shocking to the aviation community.
As investigations continue, authorities aim to uncover the factors that led to this catastrophic event to prevent future occurrences. The global aviation industry watches closely, awaiting findings that could have significant implications for aircraft safety protocols and pilot training programs.
Our thoughts are with the families and friends of the victims during this incredibly difficult time.
