The aircraft was carrying 242 individuals, including 230 passengers and 12 crew members. Tragically, there were no survivors.

The Incident

Flight 171 departed at 1:38 p.m. local time. Within minutes, the aircraft issued a mayday call and lost contact with air traffic control at an altitude of approximately 625 feet. The plane crashed into a residential area in the Meghani Nagar neighborhood, specifically striking a hostel building associated with B.J. Medical College. Eyewitnesses reported hearing multiple explosions and seeing thick black smoke billowing from the crash site.

Casualties and Nationalities

All 242 people on board perished in the crash. The passengers included 169 Indian nationals, 53 Britons, seven Portuguese, and one Canadian. Additionally, the crash resulted in fatalities and injuries among residents in the densely populated area where the plane went down.

Rescue operations were challenged by the intensity of the fire and the structural damage to the buildings. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has initiated a comprehensive investigation to determine the cause of the crash. Preliminary reports indicate that the aircraft's undercarriage had not been retracted, and the flaps appeared to have been retracted at the time of the crash.

Significance
