The birth of your child should be one of the most memorable and joyful days of your life. But if doctors, nurses, or other healthcare providers assisting with the delivery are negligent, the effects can be devastating.

Between six and eight infants out of every 1,000 newborns suffer birth injuries—or around one in every 9,714 people in the U.S. In addition, around 20 percent of infant fatalities are related to birth injuries, including those associated with healthcare provider negligence.

What Are the Levels of Birth Injuries and Their Effects on Infants?

While some birth injuries are fatal, almost all of them can result in serious and lifelong damage to both infants and their mothers. Different levels of birth injuries and their associated complications include:

  • Mild birth injuries—When doctors handle infants too roughly, especially during delivery, they can cause mild injuries such as bruising, bone fractures, and even brain bleeds.
  • Moderate birth injuries—Injuries that are more likely to produce long-term effects and even disabilities include compound fractures, oxygen deprivation, and subdural hemorrhages.
  • Severe birth injuries—Often associated with permanent damage and even life-threatening complications, severe birth injuries include conditions such as brachial palsy, Erb’s palsy, Klumpke’s palsy, and traumatic brain injuries.

Doctors and other medical professionals are supposed to provide preventive and hands-on care when you’re pregnant, including being aware of potential birth difficulties, being cautious during delivery, and giving newborns immediate care and attention after delivery. When they fail to do that, serious birth injuries and complications can occur.
