Not quite sure at this point if Spring will ever come to Northeast Ohio. But when it does we can be sure to see the re-emergence of motorcycles on the roadways and highways.
Statistically this can be a problem for the avid motorcyclist and the inattentive driver. According to statistics reported by the U.S. Department of Transportation (www.motorcycleaccident.org) motorcyclists are 35 times more likely to experience a deadly accident on the road than those in passenger cars. In my 30 years as a plaintiff’s attorney representing injured persons, many of whom were riding motorcycles at the time of their injuries, an inattentive motorist was usually to blame.
Personally, I have not ridden a motorcycle since my early twenties. However, in driving passenger cars for over 35 years, I know that when the weather starts getting nice in Northeast Ohio I have to pay more attention to motorcycles on the road as they are far less visible than the average American-made 4-door sedan.
Cell phone users and other distracted drivers will likely cause most of the damage - not the motorcyclist. So please pay attention, stay off those phones and wait to eat that fast food meal until after you get home. Somebody’s life may depend on it.
Motorcyclists, wear your protective gear! Helmets for sure. According to the US Department of Transportation (www.motorcycleaccident.org), a motorcyclist wearing a helmet reduces his or her risk of a fatal injury by 37% and risk of any type of injury by 15%, particularly an open or closed head injury.
So let’s not ruin that beautiful Spring day ... whenever it finally comes. Let’s all be mindful of what is on the road and how to better protect ourselves and others. Simply put, Motorcycles and Spring do not have to be a fatal combination.
